More Pirate Streaming Websites Are Targeted in Australia

A new case was launched by the Australian pay TV company Foxtel seeking to have major pirate streaming platforms blocked on the ISP level. It all started last year, when the local government introduced new law to allow pirate services to be blocked in the country. Soon after, a lawsuit was brought by a number of Hollywood studios, in result of which the Federal Court ordered Australian ISPs to block key torrent trackers and streaming portals, including The Pirate Bay.

Now Foxtel files the fifth case seeking injunctions against pirate sites in the country and second of its own. Like in previous cases, Internet service providers named in the application include TPG, Telstra, Optus and Vocus/M2. When their subsidiaries are included, blocking becomes effectively widespread across the country, often encompassing dozens of smaller providers.

Foxtel is confident that the Australian Federal Court will ultimately order the websites to be blocked. Industry experts agree with the company – the earlier cases launched by the studios and record companies have indeed pioneered a streamlined process that can be tackled by copyright owners and presented to the court in an easily understood format.

Hopefully for the ISPs, the issue of costs appears to be behind them: for instance, in Foxtel’s earlier case, the judge said that broadband providers must be paid AUS$50 per domain blocked, and this rate now appears to be the standard. The rightsholders’ applications are made against a particular batch of websites, and if further similar and related sites need to be blocked, this requires a separate and simplified process.
